Seeing a False Claim Once Can Lift Its Next Truth Rating

Seeing a false claim can lift its truth rating, even when people correctly answer a question about the fact it contradicts. Exposure changes the rating, not the evidence.

The second view adds a clue

Seeing a false claim can lift its truth rating, even for people who correctly answer a question about the fact it contradicts.

Here, “truer” has a narrow meaning. People gave the claim a higher score when asked if it was true. The studies did not show a firm new belief or a change in what people did.

Lisa Fazio asked fact questions and compared the answers with ratings for false statements about those facts. Some statements had appeared earlier. Others were new.

Correct answers on Fazio’s fact questions mattered more than prior exposure. On average, false statements linked to correct answers stayed far below those linked to missed answers. Yet prior exposure still gave the first group a small lift.

The result needs an explanation because the earlier view added no new evidence.

Why easier reading may matter

One idea is that a sentence takes less work to read when it returns. That ease may act as a clue when people judge truth. The ratings do not prove this inner step.

Christian Unkelbach trained people in a setting where statements in clear type were usually false and statements in harder type were usually true. Later, old statements got lower truth ratings than new ones on average.

The old-and-new result had reversed: old statements scored lower, not higher. The study does not support a fixed link between easy reading and truth.

The next step asks whether prior exposure also produces a higher average rating for claims that look like posts in a feed.

The pattern reached social-style headlines

Gordon Pennycook, Tyrone Cannon, and David Rand tested real and false news headlines drawn from online content and shown like social posts. They asked how accurate each headline was. On average, false headlines seen before later got slightly higher scores than new false headlines.

The shifts were small. The least plausible claims did not gain the same lift.

The posts appeared in online tests, not live feeds. Their format shows the practical difference: a headline can appear again without gaining a new source.

A repeat and a source do different jobs

A feed can show the same headline many times. That builds its exposure history. A source records where the claim came from and what supports it.

Applying the results to feeds and source checks is my reading. The studies did not ask whether checking a source changes later ratings.

In the experiments, exposure changed while the evidence did not. Later ratings still moved. A repeat can affect a judgment, but it is not another reason to believe the claim.
