Researchers took brain scans while people looked at photos of someone they used to be in a relationship with. They compared these with scans taken during painful heat.
Some brain areas responded to both experiences. But the patterns of activity differed enough for researchers to tell them apart. The same brain area can respond differently to heartbreak and physical pain.
