In 1932, farmers in Western Australia wanted help against emus, large flightless birds eating crops and damaging fences. Soldiers arrived with machine guns.
The birds scattered, making them hard to shoot. The soldiers killed emus without solving the farmers’ problem, and the operation was abandoned.
Farmers later asked for military help again; the government refused. The episode became known as the Emu War.
