Why unfinished work can distract you from the next task

You leave a report unfinished and start another task, but keep thinking about the report.

Across four studies, this distraction was worse when people expected to return to unfinished work in a rush. Making a brief plan for that return helped.

The interruption still happened. The plan gave people a way to pick up the unfinished work, instead of keeping its loose ends in mind.
