Learning a skill can reveal mistakes you missed

In four studies, people with the lowest scores on humor, grammar and logic tests thought they had done much better than they had. Researchers suggested that spotting a wrong answer takes some of the same skills as giving a right one.

After improving those skills, participants judged their own performance more accurately. The finding does not mean every beginner is overconfident.
