In four studies, people took humor, grammar and logic tests. The lowest scorers thought they'd done far better than they had.
Why? Researchers suggested spotting a wrong answer takes some of the same skills as giving a right one. Don't know a grammar rule? You can't notice breaking it.
Some people got training in a tested skill. Those people then judged their own performance more accurately.
