A politician won over a rival by borrowing a book

American politician Benjamin Franklin wanted a man he worked with to stop treating him coldly. He asked to borrow the man's rare book.

Franklin later wrote that he returned it about a week later, with a thank-you note. The man began treating him more kindly. They eventually became friends.

This is Franklin's story about one friendship, not proof that asking for favors always works.
