LFP Batteries Trade Range for Staying Power

LFP batteries are not simply worse because they store less energy for their weight.

Lithium iron phosphate chemistry uses a cathode with a different voltage and capacity profile than some nickel-rich lithium-ion chemistries.

That can mean a heavier battery for the same vehicle range.

In return, LFP cells avoid nickel and cobalt, tolerate repeated charging well, and are comparatively resistant to thermal runaway.

The choice depends on 1 constraint: weight, cost, lifespan, or thermal stability. A grid battery and a long-range vehicle may want different compromises.
