Sailing Stones Move on Thin Ice

Racetrack Playa's stones do move, but not because the desert floor is secretly alive. In rare winter conditions, shallow water freezes into thin sheets of ice around the rocks. As the ice starts to melt, light wind can push those sheets across wet mud, nudging stones and leaving long tracks.
