An Arctic crew’s note: “All well.” Later: 24 dead.

Explorer John Franklin’s two ships were looking for a sea route in the icy Arctic, far to the north. They became trapped in ice. In May 1847, a crew member left a note saying “All well.”

Eleven months later, another message reported 24 deaths, including Franklin’s. The survivors had abandoned the ships.

Searchers found both messages on one sheet. The deaths were recorded around the edges of “All well.”
