In 1704, sailor Alexander Selkirk decided his leaky ship wasn't safe. When it stopped at an uninhabited island off Chile, he asked to stay. The captain agreed, and wouldn't take him back when he changed his mind.
He lived alone there for over four years until a ship rescued him.
He'd been right about the ship. It sank, and its few survivors were jailed by the enemy Spanish for four years.
