The bat-and-ball puzzle with a tempting wrong answer

A bat and ball together cost $1.10. The bat costs exactly $1 more than the ball. How much is the ball?

Ten cents sounds plausible. But then the bat would cost $1.10, making the total $1.20. The ball is five cents and the bat $1.05. Psychologist Daniel Kahneman used this puzzle to show the difference between accepting a quick answer and checking whether it fits the question.
