Why surgery teams say the basic checks out loud

Before the first cut, a surgical team checks together: Is this the right patient? The right operation? The right place on the body?

These checks are part of the World Health Organization’s surgical checklist.

Saying them aloud lets others hear and correct a mistake. A fact checked silently by one person is different from a fact the whole team has confirmed.
