Elevator mirrors can help wheelchair users back out

An elevator may be too cramped for a wheelchair user to turn around. Leaving then means moving backward toward a space they cannot easily see.

A mirror can show obstacles behind them, like a rear-view mirror. Elevator maker Schindler includes mirrors for this purpose in its accessibility package.

The reflection helps the person judge the route out. A feature that seems decorative can also make the next movement easier to see.
