In 1453, the army of the Ottoman Empire, a powerful Turkish state, attacked Constantinople, the city now called Istanbul. Its cannons smashed sections of the city's stone walls.
A witness described a tower knocked flat. Defenders filled the gap with barrels packed with stones and earth, a rough new wall the attackers had to smash again.
The city eventually fell, but for weeks its defenders rebuilt the walls as fast as cannons knocked them down.
