In 1453, Ottoman forces attacked Constantinople, the city now called Istanbul. Cannon fire damaged its protective walls.
A witness described a collapsed tower. Defenders filled the opening with barrels, stones and earth, while attackers kept firing at the repaired section.
Defending the city meant rebuilding barriers as they were broken down. The city eventually fell, but its walls had been repeatedly repaired during the attack.
