A Watched Raven Moves the Food

A raven hiding food has a problem if another bird saw the spot.

That observer may return later and steal the cache, so 1 watched bird may move the food somewhere else.

Experiments have found this rehiding behavior, especially in ravens with experience pilfering caches themselves.

The behavior does not show that a raven thinks exactly like a person, but it shows sensitivity to another bird's visual access and likely actions.

The food moves because social information changes the risk around the hiding place.
