In an experiment, 124 adults tried two email routines. For one week, they checked three times a day with alerts off. For another, they could check freely with alerts on.
They reported less stress during the limited-checking week. But two things changed: how often they checked and whether alerts arrived. The study could not separate their effects. Volunteers also had some choice about when to check.
