Researchers used lasers to send powerful pressure waves through plastic, turning its carbon into tiny diamonds. The plastic supplied hydrogen and carbon, ingredients found inside the planets Uranus and Neptune.
The experiment briefly recreated conditions thought to exist deep inside those planets. Short bursts of X-rays captured the diamonds forming before those conditions disappeared.
The result supports the idea that diamonds could form there and sink deeper. But the diamonds were seen in a laboratory, not inside a planet.
