Noon happens at different times as Earth turns. Sailors could use the Sun to find noon where they were. Then they compared that with a clock showing the time at a known place.
The time gap showed how far east or west they were from that place. But a moving ship could upset a clock's accuracy. Clockmaker John Harrison built clocks that could keep accurate time at sea.
