Were woolly mammoths, hairy elephant relatives, alive when Egypt built the Great Pyramid?

Woolly mammoths feel like cave-painting animals, gone long before anyone wrote anything down. Most did die out about 10,000 years ago, as the Ice Age ended.

But a small herd survived on Wrangel Island, a frozen island north of Siberia, cut off when sea levels rose. Their bones there date to about 4,000 years ago.

That's several centuries after Egyptians finished the Great Pyramid, a giant stone tomb for a king.
