Radio helped save the Eiffel Tower from being taken down

The Eiffel Tower in Paris originally had permission to stand for only 20 years. Built for a large exhibition in 1889, it needed a reason to stay.

Its creator, Gustave Eiffel, promoted practical uses for it. The tower’s height made it useful for sending radio messages.

That new job helped keep it standing when its original permission was about to run out.
