In the 1630s, Dutch traders bought tulip bulbs—the parts planted to grow the flowers—hoping to sell them for more. Prices rose and then collapsed.
Later stories claimed that people across Dutch society had gambled away their wealth. But historian Anne Goldgar studied old records and found a much smaller group of traders and less money lost.
The price crash was real; the stories exaggerated how many people it hurt.
