In Genesis, the Bible's first book, people speaking one language start building a city. They want a tower reaching the heavens, to make a name for themselves.
God confuses their language so they can't understand each other. They scatter across the earth.
So the city gets a name: Babel. In Hebrew, Genesis's original language, Babel sounds like the word for "confused."
