Tired muscles can shake even while you hold still

Even holding still takes muscle work. Nerves tell groups of muscle fibers—thin strands inside a muscle—to pull.

In a study of tiring thigh muscles, more groups joined in as the pulling became less steady. Researchers suggested that the new groups could add small, uneven pulls.

Adding more muscle to the effort did not necessarily make the hold smoother.
