In 1854, cholera, a deadly disease, hit a London neighborhood. Doctor John Snow suspected it spread through drinking water.
Most deaths were near the Broad Street pump. But some victims lived nearer other pumps. They still drank Broad Street water. So the link wasn't living nearby. It was the water.
Officials then removed the pump's handle so nobody could drink its water.
