The Card in Her Handwriting

Inez found the checkout card because the returned book fell open while she locked the library. Her name filled the last line in blue ink, dated 1987—nine years before she was born. The radiator clicked behind the shelves, and a cart rolled one wheel forward on the level floor. She touched the signature; the wet ink stained her thumb. From the dark reading room, someone whispered, You forgot this part again. The front doors locked themselves.
