In 1453, Ottoman forces attacked Constantinople, the city now called Istanbul. Cannons broke gaps in its protective walls. People inside had to repair them while the attack continued.
Witness Nicolò Barbaro described repairs made with barrels, dirt, stones and branches. The battle was not one clean moment when a wall fell. Attackers opened gaps; defenders tried to close them before soldiers could get through.
