Gold is made of atoms, tiny building blocks of matter. Researchers fired fast particles with an electric charge at thin gold foil. Most went straight through; a few turned sharply back.
Scientist Ernest Rutherford proposed a tiny charged center inside each atom. Its electric force could turn passing particles without touching them. Most particles passed far from that center, now called the nucleus.
