Scientists placed dried-out tardigrades, tiny animals nicknamed water bears, outside a spacecraft. Some faced only the airless conditions of space; others also faced radiation from the Sun.
Many survived without air and became active again when water returned. But direct, unfiltered sunlight killed most animals exposed to it.
