Scientists dried out tiny animals called tardigrades, or water bears. Dried tardigrades lie still, as if switched off. Then the dried animals rode outside a spacecraft.
Many survived the airless space. When given water, they moved again.
Some tardigrades also faced the Sun's direct rays. Out there, no air blocked those rays. The rays killed most of the animals they reached.
