In Genesis, the Bible's first book, Jacob is alone at night. A mysterious man wrestles him until dawn.
The man hurts Jacob's hip. Still, Jacob won't let go until he's blessed. He gets a new name, Israel.
Because of that hurt hip, the story says, Jacob's descendants, the Israelites, don't eat the hip tendon. That's a tough cord linking muscle to bone.
