How blue LED lights helped make white ones

An LED is a tiny device that makes light when electricity passes through special materials. Red and green versions came long before bright, efficient blue ones.

Blue light helped make white light possible. A coating takes in some blue light and gives off other colors. They mix with the blue that remains, and look white together.

That helped turn LEDs into efficient lights for ordinary rooms.
