In 1948, Soviet forces blocked roads, railways and waterways into West Berlin. That part of the city was controlled by Western countries but surrounded by Soviet-controlled territory.
Agreed routes through the air stayed open. The U.S. and Britain used them to fly in food and fuel.
Those deliveries kept the city supplied until the blockade—the closing of ground and water routes—ended in May 1949.
